Meet Coach Matt (aka. CoachMattBear)

I forewarned Matt a week in advance that he was going to be talked about on the newsletter. So the truth comes out!… ;)

Meet Coach Matt, also my husband, and also my favorite person on planet earth.

If I could wish for one thing in this crazy world, it would be that everyone find what they love. That doesn’t have to be right away. It’s okay that we ride the ups and downs, and find the highs and lows, but I would hope through the big waves and the dull lulls, we would find what we are meant to do.

The Matt Stats:

  • 8x CrossFit Games Coach

  • Air Force Academy Grad / Former Football Player for The Air Force Falcons

Sometimes I pick on Matt for being so methodical through life. I said it on our first podcast that he will answer your question from every different angle. He’s very thoughtful. But, really I shouldn’t because in 2011, Matt took the crazy leap to open CrossFit BOLT instead of using his well earned degree to start a secure job. So, as much as I pick on him, I know he’s crazy, and not afraid to walk his own path.

*Shout out to all the affiliate owners out there that have taken the crazy leap into a career that will make you work, but have such meaningful rewards.

You guys know him as Coach. So let’s dig into that side first! Coach Matt takes that thoughtfulness into everything he does in the gym and for BOLT. From coaching itself, to programming, to creating business goals, he is always analyzing the details and possibilities. He’s an amazing programmer! Ask anyone here at BOLT or has even stopped by BOLT for a few days to experience the gym’s programming. He has a way of creating workouts that are so unique and so challenging, and most importantly shows progress. I’ve watched him sit down and write these workouts… he’s picky… he wants the best for all of his athletes. He’s an amazing Coach! You guys are always so complimentary of me and my coaching skills, but just realize that all of my skills came from CoachMattBear. Plain and Simple, HE CARES. If you walk through the door at BOLT and share some of your time with him, he does his very best to make the most of it and you can feel that.

Outside of the gym, Matt is weird in the best way possible. He teases me for not being able to sit still and always working, but as soon as we get home every evening, he’s outside pulling weeds (see podcast episode 1 for explanation). He’s not afraid not hop in on my random dance parties and spends the rest of his time wrestling our wild house animal, BLITZ.

There’s been a lot questions about Matt and I’s relationship and how it came about. Let’s be real for a second guys! Do you really think I’d be doing what I’m doing, posting crazy videos, sharing all of my accomplishments, and chasing down these crazy dreams if our relationship wasn’t built off of confidence. I couldn’t have asked for a cooler person to share my life with. Matt and I push each other. No dream is too big when you trust work ethic. We are a team and a pretty good one at that. I believe what makes us a strong couple and really secures our relationship as Coach/Athlete and Husband/Wife is respect for each other. We hold very similar values. He makes me better and life a whole lotta fun!

Hanging with the WORLD’S STRONGEST MAN!

This past Sunday we had the honor of training alongside the current World’s Strongest Man, Mitchell Hooper . Mitchell is touring the country, visiting many popular CrossFit athletes and we were so honored to be one of his stops!

Not gonna lie, it’s a little intimidating when the World’s Strongest Man says we are gonna deadlift today, asks for our stiffest bar in an effort to not bend our barbells, and then loads up 800+ pounds to hit a double for the day. Hey, I was proud of my lil 300 pound deadlift! We spent some time lifting and I got some great cues to help my lifts. The coolest part was having some advice from Michell (which I’m not sure he even realized he was doing), was how encouraging he was. I like to think #BIGBecca is my alter ego. I’m still training myself to always see myself as BIG Becca. Mitchell reminded me that there are power lifters my size hitting some big numbers out there. In my situation I need to dial in that technique to get every bit out of this lil body.

You guys should know me by now! If I want something, I will work my butt off to get it. You’ll see me working those deadlift tips I got from the World’s Strongest Man and you’ll see me pulling some big numbers in the future!

Other Things We Did!

Beside being an incredible athlete, Mitchell is such a genuine guy. Getting to chat not only Strongman with him, but also business and how he’s growing his own personal brand was inspiring. He seemed like a hustler, a smart hard working dude. TIP: Surround yourself with people on a similar mission as you.
