Creating Checkpoints

Training is obviously a BIG part of my life, not only from a sports and competition stand point, but health and physical/mental wellbeing. I was recently analyzing how I was personally feeling about my training, my choices leading up to each training session, how I was responding to bad session, as well as good. And just like most of us out there I would think to myself… “definitely room for improvement”.

Back around the holidays of last year, I felt like I was going through an icky slump. I had never cried so much during training sessions. I felt like my mind was failing me, which lead to my body hurting and too many of those rough sessions can get in your head. “Burn Out” is real and I think it is the one thing all athletes are really trying to avoid. Going through that slump forced me to really analyze “what I was doing”, “why I was feeling that way”, and “how can I fix this”.

If you’ve been hanging around my story for some time you would know that I qualified for the CrossFit Games in 2022. My dream came true and the hard work paid off. In the 2023 season, the same did not happen. We fell short of the goal of making it back to the Games and my season ended in May of 2023. I didn’t plan any competitions for the rest of the year. I wanted to put some time and effort into BOLT and have fun creating content (which has become a BIG part of what I do now).

When we got back to training for this upcoming season, I was super excited, as always, but we all know that new chapter excitement has its duration. Lots of long training days/hours add up and will test you. It was a fight through the end of 2023, all the way up to leaving for Miami to compete at WODAPALOOZA in mid January.

Once we stepped on the floor to compete in Miami… IT ALL CAME BACK! The love, the fight, the enjoyment, remembering why we do all the reps and suffer in training… IT ALL CAME BACK!

Point of this story is, and what I think I’ve learned from this past season, is to create checkpoints. I think I fell into a hard slump because I had such a long period of “waiting” and staying in the grind.

If you feel like you’ve been through a time like this or are currently going through one, try creating a checkpoint for yourself. It could be as simple as a local competition, a 5k, a consistency challenge. Write it down and keep your eyes on that next checkpoint. Remember the overall goal and the BIG picture, but focus on getting tot hat next checkpoint!
