What is wrong with your elbow? (If I had a dollar for every time I was asked about my elbow, I think I’d be a millionaire at this point)
Long story short, old gymnastics injuries and I have some oddly shaped elbows. Lol. I used to have hyperextended elbow when I was younger, which is not uncommon, especially in gymnasts. The most important thing for when you have an athlete that is hyper mobile through any joint is that you encourage them to develop the muscles around that joint (aka. GET STRONG). That way those strong muscles hold that joint in place.
CrossFit and general strength training has helped me big time with keeping my elbows strong. However, I have one other fun fact about not just my right elbow, but both. They bow outwards… how fun. So when you guys see me lift overhead and they look slightly bent, they’re not. My right arm bows more than my left and often gives me way more trouble.
The injuries that I had in gymnastics came from overuse, meaning I didn’t hurt them on a specific skill, the injuries progressed overtime with normal training. At the time I head broke the radial head and fractured the growth plate. The bow in my elbows cause more strain on that thumb side of my arm.
Does it hurt? Yes, but just like anything, we are smart and thoughtful about training and I do a good bit of strength/accessory on it to keep it going.
How Do You Stay Motivated/Push Through the Hard Days?
How Many Hours a Day Do I Train?
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: My total training hours typically add up to between 4-5
My schedule goes from training, to coaching, to eating ALL DAY LONG. Typically I have a morning session, an early afternoon session, and finish the evening with strength accessory and mobility work.
Saturday: We hit one big session starting at 7am and finishing around 1 or 2pm
I know that sounds a little crazy, but I do have a couple coaching hours worked in there as well.
Thursday: Swimming, Zone 2 Machines, or Cleaning the Gym
Sunday: Full Rest
Yah gotta realize that when we say our training sessions last a couple hours at a time, we are not constantly working out for two hours. It typically consists on warm ups, strength work/lifting, and a metcon. And don’t forget all the clean up time that comes with it. So, it’s crazy! But, not as crazy as it actually sounds!
My Merch Line with Cambro Apparel
I’ve known my friends at CAMBRO for a long time now. The fist time I bumped into them was way back in 2015 at a competition. I was just a customer then, but it was towards the beginning of my competitive career.
(Fun Fact: I missed qualifying for the CrossFit Games as a teenager in 2015 by 4 Spots).
Now, if you have or maybe one day ask me why I chose to line up with the brands/companies that I do, I’ll say “because of it’s values”. CAMBRO Apparel based out of Texas, so I crossed paths with them a lot at local comps and other events at the beginning of my career. They are Good People.
My favorite thing about being partnered with CAMBRO is the creativity that comes with every piece of apparel they do. Anyone can slap a logo on a t-shirt. CAMBRO is out here whipping up my apparel as well as Dragon Ball Z, Harry Potter, Motivating, and other crazy/creative designs.
Check out my Apparel Line Here! And while you’re there go check out all their other designs! I’ll bet you’ll find some that make you smile.
